We work in Microsoft and have always had great experience with planner. However, planner is great for individuals, it is not great for project managers or managers. There is no way to get an overview of all the tasks in a certain budget, within a certain date or for a certain employee. This is where Planner Manager comes in. It completely solves this issue by allowing us to create views for all these scenarios, in a simple and effective view. We have several dozen customers and have a planner board for each one. Choosing and syncing each of these planner board has been kind of annoying over the years but the benefits of planner manager far outweighs this.
