You are unable to regularly extrude and merge a solid. I just created a new solid while your existing sheetmetal stays the same. This is very frustrating, as sometimes it is easier to just extrude than to use a flat or flange. The other thing is that when you are creating an assembly, there is a design structure based on when you put the part into the assembly.
