### "My Transition from Adobe Lightroom to Phototools IMatch" — 5.0/5

> **Reinder** | *June 1, 2026* | Publishing | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: Loads of actually working functionality, a rock solid database, AI integration, excellent filter and search technique\!
>
> **Cons**: Sometimes a steep learning curve but manageable by the excellent support and documentation. Its really fun to work with...as it should be all software
>
> Managing my photo collection over the past twenty years has been a journey of highs and lows. Naturally, I tried various software packages with varying degrees of success. For managing my collection, keywords (tags) are the most critical functionality. With Adobe's forced transition to a subscription model for Photoshop, I gained access to Lightroom. This provided a fresh start for my collection management, and I was able to tag a portion of the archive with the necessary keywords.

At the same time, it became glaringly obvious that Lightroom, due to its almost antique design, is completely unsuitable for managing a large collection. Adobe is well aware of this, of course, but continues to try to keep customers on board with vague instructions when it comes to performance. Over the years, it also became clear that the program makes no progress in terms of management functionality. The workflow is cumbersome and, above all, very slow (even on a 10 Mbit network). Bottom line: totally unsuitable for managing an expanding collection. It must be noted, however, that I naturally made the classic mistake of starting proper management too late. The backlog you accumulate as a result is simply impossible to catch up on using Lightroom.

At the beginning of this year, I made the decision and started looking for a replacement. IMatch emerged as a serious candidate. If software seems capable of doing what I need, I go for it. I usually deal with any downsides later, and yes, that does occasionally backfire. IMatch was purchased, and I immediately started importing the first folders. Since I was satisfied with the initial results, I went straight ahead with the rest of the import.

Did this go off without a hitch? No, absolutely not. For selecting the folders, I used the server share mapped as a drive, alongside the favourites for the same structure in Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, I was caught off guard by Windows and IMatch: behind the scenes, the same folders turned out to be handled differently, resulting in a mountain of duplicate folders in the database. When deleting them, I ran into new issues because the thumbnails in the duplicate folders disappeared as well. With some struggling, I managed to clean up the database and resolve the issue. During this process, it was a pleasant surprise that the database remained stable. Despite my own fumbling, I didn't have to do a reinstallation. IMatch has built its database rock-solid; in Lightroom, this would have ended in tears.

Following the import, I began researching and tackling the tagging process. Ollama was installed, and without any trouble, I managed to get a model running that could automatically determine an important keyword group and import it into IMatch. However, this existing model had its limitations, so I then looked into whether it would be possible to train a model myself. This also succeeded with the necessary effort, but the processing speed turned out to be disappointing. Yes, it was certainly faster than doing it by hand, but processing 800,000 photos while still only capturing a fraction of the required keywords was not a viable option.

With the advice from IMatch in mind, I subsequently switched to a paid model. Constructing and testing the prompt took a lot of time, but the results were encouraging. Naturally, you then want to refine the model further, but unfortunately, I pushed it too far. The AI literally ruined the prompt; the result meant it was end of the story for that specific attempt. Following that, I set about drafting a new prompt myself, based on the experiences with the first one. After loading it in, the combination with the chosen paid model was quite literally astonishingly good.

Because you always want more, I also tested newer, better models. I discovered that newer models are granted far too much freedom, making them difficult to keep under control via the prompt. Therefore, I stuck with the previous model and have now tagged tens of thousands of photos. I am currently playing around with the results and am genuinely thrilled. In just a few weeks, I have accomplished 100 times more than in 15 years of Lightroom. For the first time, my photo collection is searchable and fast — very fast.

IMatch has turned out to be a bullseye. The program is packed with options, many of which I haven't even seen or been able to try yet. It often takes some searching to find where a specific option or functionality is located, but fortunately, IMatch features exceptionally well-maintained documentation. Are there no negative aspects at all? Yes, certainly, such as the layout of the program. You can configure it entirely to your own liking, but even then, a 32-inch screen is only just enough.

For the time being, I am still very busy getting the collection in order. Once this is completed, I would certainly like to share my experiences regarding the actual, day-to-day use of IMatch.

### "The most capable, flexible, photo (and other media) management tool available" — 5.0/5

> **Dave** | *February 12, 2025* | Photography | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: This is a tool, not a toy. It's designed to be used with huge numbers of photos. I have hundreds of thousands of high resolution photos and it works incredibly well. There is full, detailed documentation on almost every feature. The developer trusts you to make your own choices on every aspect, so there are hundreds of settings to choose from to make it fit your own workflow. Probably best of all, the support given directly from the developer (Mario) to customers is second to none. I cannot recommend this software highly enough. It even works with videos and other file formats. The developer is constantly adding new features and streamlining existing ones.
>
> **Cons**: I cannot think of any 'con'. The software is complex, and can appear intimidating, but this is because it's been designed as a flexible, capable tool, and to be highly customisable. Try the trial version first to see if you like it.

### "Excellent product even better support." — 5.0/5

> **Mike** | *February 5, 2025* | Telecommunications | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: Low cost Digital Asset Management that makes it easy to organize, categorize, and find photos.
>
> **Cons**: It's so powerful that the learning curve is quite steep.
>
> Very good. I use it several times a week. Sometimes for extended periods.

### "Best Photo Management software for Windows users" — 5.0/5

> **Floris** | *April 16, 2020* | Design | Recommendation rating: 9.0/10
>
> **Pros**: It is built on open standards and supports different workflows for different people. The new 2020 version has great tools to manage People, Events, Keywords and introduced face recognition functionality that saves a lot of time and gives unprecedented control over how and when it is applied. I work with different software (Affnity Photo, Photoshop, Capture One, Lightroom and PhotoLab) and IMatch augments my workflow to a great extend with each and every one of them.
>
> **Cons**: Because of the rich feature set, things can get quite complex and it sometimes takes trial-and-error and a lot of reading to figure out how to achieve something. This is largely resolved with excellent documentation of every single feature and an active community forum.
>
> So far my experience has been very good. Because the system adopts open standards and is focused on maximum interoperability, you cannot go wrong with this package. It is the best Photo Management Software for Windows user. For Mac users I recommend PhotoSupreme as a great alternative (but on Windows nothing comes remotely close to IMatch).

### "Awesome program to edit and manage your photos and videos." — 4.0/5

> **Verified Reviewer** | *July 15, 2018* | Recommendation rating: 8.0/10
>
> **Pros**: The main advantages are the speed with which it allows searching the photos in the database and its ability to convert in situ metadata.
>
> **Cons**: Its impossibility to import the photos and videos from the camera directly and export to social networks once edited.
